Taipei, June 27 (CNA) Liu Ka-shiang, a renowned writer, nature observer and veteran journalist, was appointed new chairman of the state-run Central News Agency on Tuesday (CNA), the Ministry of Culture announced in a press release.

Stressing that CNA has an obligation to provide fair and objective news reporting, Culture Minister Cheng Li-chiun said she believes Liu will offer capable leadership and ensure the agency maximizes its role as a public news organization.

In addition to working as a journalist for media outlets over the past 25 years, Liu, 59, is also an acclaimed writer, poet and long-time commentator on Taiwan's culture, society and ecology.

After being proposed by the Ministry of Culture as the new chairman of CNA, Liu's candidacy was approved by the Executive Yuan at a meeting on Tuesday morning, in which other candidates for the agency's 8th board of directors and board of supervisors recommended by the ministry were also approved.

Cheng expressed hope that the new boards, comprised of individuals from a wide range of social backgrounds, will inject new ideas and energy into CNA.

"As a state-run news agency, CNA should pursue greater internationalization, professionalism and maximize its role as a media organization that serves the public interest," the minister stressed.

Noting that press freedom in Taiwan has recently been ranked the highest in Asia by Reporters Without Borders and that protecting freedom of the press is one of Taiwan's most treasured values, Cheng encouraged CNA to transform itself into an international news platform that showcases Taiwan's unique perspective on global affairs.

"This will enable people in Taiwan to gain a deeper understanding of the world, while allowing the rest of the world to know Taiwan and demonstrate Taiwan's values through its multi-language news service."

On the other hand, CNA should also further develop digitized news reporting and provide fair and objective news reporting of public information and professional news services, she urged.

"CNA can also play the role of a high quality provider of news to civic society by aggregating the resources of the public broadcasting system, so as to make it a more localized news organization that fully serves the public interest."

Liu is scheduled to take over from outgoing CNA Chairman Chen Kuo-hsiang on July 3, with the first joint meeting of the new boards of directors and supervisors taking place the same day.
