Paris, July 9 (CNA) The Taiwan-France Higher Education Forum took place in the French city of Reims Monday, during which the delegates addressed higher education development and policies in their respective countries and discussed ways to strengthen partnerships and international cooperation.

The forum drew approximately 200 people, including representatives of 104 Taiwanese and French schools.

Members of the Taiwanese delegation, led by Bi Tzu-an, head of the education ministry's Department of International and Cross-strait Education Affairs, included Su Huey-jen, chairwoman of the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan, nine university presidents and 24 university vice presidents and executives in charge of international affairs.

In his address at the opening ceremony, Guillaume Gelle, president of Universite de Reims Champagne-Ardenne, praised Taiwan as a role model in economic development and innovation, with funds allocated for research and development reaching over 3 percent of its gross domestic product.

Gelle said France and Taiwan maintain 482 inter-school accords and 36 agreements related to dual academic degrees. However, the relationship is still unable to cover all the possible cooperation opportunities for the two countries, he added.

Therefore, he said, he expects the forum to facilitate cooperation in the areas of digital science, intelligence system engineering, life science, medicine, biotechnology, agricultural food science, and environmental science.

Reims, a city in the Grand Est region of France, lies some 129 kilometers northeast of Paris.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the forum, Bi signed scholarship cooperation agreements with two universities in Paris -- the Université Paris-Saclay and the Université Paris-Sud.

Under the pacts, Taiwan will select talented students to study doctoral programs at the universities in the academic years between 2019 and 2021.
