Taipei, July 14 (CNA) A visit to El Salvador by Foreign Minister Joseph Wu has enhanced bilateral relations between Taiwan and the Central American country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Saturday.
Wu and El Salvador President Salvador Sánchez Cerén met for an hour on Friday and exchanged views on relations between the two sides, the ministry said in a statement.
Sánchez stressed his strong support for Taiwan-El Salvador relations and expressed gratitude for Taiwan's assistance in helping El Salvador improve its educational system, productivity and social order.
Speaking on behalf of President Tsai Ing-wen, Wu said Taiwan highly values the relations and cooperation between the two countries.
On the same occasion, Taiwan's foreign minister gave Sánchez a letter signed by Tsai in which she congratulated El Salvador on the Oct. 14 canonization of Archbishop of San Salvador Oscar Romero in Rome.
Wu also met with El Salvador's acting foreign minister, Carlos Castaneda, on July 12, during which Wu thanked the country for supporting Taiwan's bid to participate in the World Health Assembly (WHA), International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
At a dinner with El Salvador Vice President Oscar Ortiz, Wu said Taiwan will invest more through state-run businesses in the country's agriculture, industry and infrastructure sectors.
After his stay in El Salvador from July 12 to 15, Wu will visit Belize on July 16-17 before he returns to Taiwan.
It is the first time Wu has visited Taiwan's diplomatic allies since he assumed his post in February.
