Taiwan looks to advance to final of Palomino League World Series

Taipei, Aug. 5 (CNA) Taiwan's youth baseball team of 17- and 18- year-olds is one step closer to the championship of the 2018 Pony Palomino League World Series after scoring its second consecutive win Sunday in Laredo, Texas with a 10-0 victory over a team from Youngstown, Ohio in just five innings.

The Taiwanese players from Ping-Jen Senior High School in Taoyuan County, holder of the Asia-Pacific Zone title, won their first game in the world series the previous day over San Antonio, Texas 13-0, also in just five innings.

An eight-team tournament, the Palomino World Series features the Pacific Zone champion, the Mexico Zone champion (Mexico), the Caribbean Zone champion (Puerto Rico), and the United States Zone champions from the east, north, south and west, as well as host Laredo.

The Taiwan team will then take on the winner of a match between Puerto Rico and Youngstown, Ohio and if it wins, will then advance to the final for the Palomino champion title, which the country first won in 2006 after taking part in the tournament for the first time one year earlier.

The Taiwan team is back at the Palomino World Series for the first time after it shifted to the Big League Baseball World Series under the Little League Baseball (LLB) from 2013, but after the LLB Big League program was canceled in 2016, it decided to return to the Palomino.
