Taipei, Sept. 11 (CNA) Taiwan and Poland held their 8th economic consultation forum Tuesday and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to forge closer economic ties.

The forum was presided over by Taiwan's Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-hsin and Poland's Deputy Minister of Entrepreneurship and Technology Tadeusz Koscinski.

According to Kung, delegations from the two sides exchanged views on a wide range of economic topics, such as smart city development, renewable energy development, biotech medical development, smart manufacturing, circular economy and various financial issues.

During the conference, Kung said, Poland expressed hope that Taiwan will increase its purchase of agricultural products from the East European country.

In terms of technology cooperation, Kung said, Taiwan Power Co., the state-owned electricity supplier, has already had technology exchanges in circular economy with research institutions in Poland.

PORT, a major Polish technical research institute, reached a preliminary consensus on future cooperation with the Taiwan government- sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) during the forum, Kung said.

A PORT delegation was scheduled to visit the ITRI the following day to hammer out details of the collaboration, Kung added.

After the forum, InvesTaiwan, an investment office under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH) signed an MOU to push for future investment.

Kung said that under the MOU, Taiwan and Poland are expected to have a platform to help enterprises on each side have better understanding about the other side's market.

He added that companies from both sides will see an increase in opportunities to cooperate.

Meanwhile Tuesday, PAIH opened an office in Taipei. The office also held a conference on investment in Poland, during which the PAIH Taipei Office signed an MOU with the Importers and Exporters Association of Taipei (IEAT).

Wang Hsun-sheng, head of IEAT, said both PAIH and IEAT hope the agreement will help the two sides explore more chances for cooperation.

According to the MOEA, most Taiwanese firms investing in Poland are in the electronics, information/communications and auto industries.
