Taiwan wins 3 gold medals at world tug-of-war championships

Taipei, Sept. 20 (CNA) Taiwan has so far won three gold medals at the Tug of War World Championships, which is being held in Cape Town, South Africa, until Saturday.

The Tug of War World Championships 2018 consist of two events -- Outdoor Club Championships and World Championships, both of which are taking place at the city's Camps Bay High School.

National Nantou Senior High School team, which competed in the club championship event, took the first gold for Taiwan by beating host country South Africa in the junior girls' 480-kilogram class tournament Wednesday morning.

Taiwan took its second gold medal in the junior mixed 560-kg class tournament the same day.

The team was made up of students from four different schools -- Taipei Jingmei Girls High School, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), National Taiwan Sport University and Taoyuan Municipal Shou Shan Senior High School.

The country secured a third gold Thursday, after a team from Jingmei Girls High School and NTNU defeated the Disa Ladies of South Africa in the final of the junior 500-kg class of the outdoor club championships.

According to organizers, more than 1,100 competitors from 20 countries have entered the competitions, including Australia, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Italy, the United States, China, and Zimbabwe.

The competition, which kicked off Wednesday, featured the Open Clubs Championships in the first two days, with clubs from around the globe eligible to participate. The official World Championships will be held on Friday and Saturday.
