Taipei, Oct. 22 (CNA) Tainan is hoping to complete the construction of its first mass rapid transit (MRT) line by 2025, the city's acting mayor, Lee Meng-yen, said Monday.

At a ceremony to launch the official establishment of the Tainan Rapid Transit Office, Lee said phase one construction, totaling 8.6 kilometers in length, will begin in 2020 and focus on the elevated MRT Circular Blue line.

Phase one work will span 12 stations from Daciao Station in the city's northern district to Datong Station in the south that make up the eastern portion of the circular line.

According to the city's transportation plan, the Tainan MRT system will eventually consist of three lines in total -- the Blue, Green and Red lines.

Lee said the three MRT lines will cover all the major transportation hubs in Tainan, including the Anping seaport, the high-speed railway station, and the local airport.

The MRT Green line will run from Anping District in the west to Pingshi in the eastern part of the city.

The MRT Red line will also connect with the city's high-speed railway station, the acting mayor said.
