Taipei, Dec. 12 (CNA) The Chinese for "Football World Cup," referring to the event organized by FIFA in Moscow this year, was the most popular key word used by Taiwanese netizens in Google Search, according to the web search engine's annual report on popular search key words in the year.

The term "Football World Cup" topped the list of 10 most-used key words in Google Search in Taiwan from December 2017 to December 2018, followed by "Story of Yanxi Palace," "earthquake," "sports lottery" and "Central Election Commission," Google Taiwan said in its Year in Search report for 2018, released on Wednesday.

These terms were followed by "Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace," "referendums," "Han Kuo-yu," "ELTA" and "vote counting," according to the report.

The Story of Yanxi Palace and Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace are television drama series from China.

The popular key words indicate that over the past year, Taiwan's netizens have kept informed about big events held every four years at home and overseas, whether the nine-in-one local government elections on Nov. 24, or the FIFA World Cup, Google said.

In contrast to previous years, this year's top 10 list was made up of several key word groups under the same topic. For example, the key words World Cup, sports lottery and ELTA were all linked to the international sports event, Google noted.

Such a phenomenon indicates that Taiwanese netizens paid attention to different aspects of popular issues, Google said.

Google first published its annual Year in Search report just before the end of the year in 2001, sharing with the world the most popular search issues of the year.
