Berlin, Dec. 11 (CNA) The Taiwan delegation to the Katowice Climate Change Conference in Poland has been meeting with participants on the sidelines to share Taiwan's experience in using technology to tackle climate change.
While Taiwan is not a signatory to the Paris Climate Agreement, members of its delegation met on the sidelines with representatives of some of its diplomatic allies, including St. Kitts and Nevis, Belize, the Solomon Islands, and Guatemala.
During the meeting, TaiwanICDF, a government-funded agency that runs the country's foreign aid programs, said Taiwan has helped its allies to keep abreast of climate change and establish an early warning system for flooding, using images sent back from its Formosat-5 satellite.
In addition, TaiwanICDF has also helped St. Kitts and Nevis to establish an early warning weather data gathering mechanism, develop and introduce crop disaster mitigation and prevention techniques, and increase the availability of agricultural information, said TaiwanICDF Deputy Secretary General Alex L. J. Shyy.
Also on the sidelines of the conference, TCI Co., Ltd., a Taiwan-based company that produces health foods and skin care products, talked about how it has managed to reduce carbon emissions by 528 tons per year at its factory in Pingtung, southern Taiwan.
The Taiwan delegation to the 24th Conference of the Parties (COP24) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is being led by Acting Environmental Minister Tsai Hung-teh and includes 40-plus representatives from several other ministries.
Delegates from some 134 countries around the world are attending COP24 in Katowice, Poland, Dec. 3-14.
