Taipei, Feb. 23 (CNA) Japan-based Ryohin Keikaku Corp., which owns the renowned MUJI brand, announced on Friday the recall of two kinds of its bottled water, after the potential carcinogen bromic acid was detected in its mineral water brand "Natural Water."
A total of 590,000 bottles of MUJI's mineral water products "Natural Water" and "Mineral Sparkling Water" that hit the market between July 4, 2018 and Feb. 21, 2019 were removed from stores in Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong, according to Japan's Tokyo Broadcasting System Television.
MUJI added the removal of its sparking water was a preventive measure, as no carcinogen was found in its "Mineral Sparkling Water" range.
According to Taiwan Water Corporation, the maximum allowable limit of bromic acid in drinking water is 0.01 mg/L.
However, Ryohin Keikaku's inspection report of its "Natural Water" bottled water showed the products contained bromic acid that was two to four times beyond the limit.
Ryohin Keikaku said the products removed were produced by a water company based in Japan's Kurobe City in Toyama Prefecture and the company has not found the cause of the excessive amount of carcinogen.
The Japanese retail brand said customers in Taiwan can return both types of bottled water either at physical retail stores or online platforms until May 31 and get a full refund.
