Taiwan, April 22 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) reiterated Monday that it is only defense capacity that can guarantee peace, which is the main goal of Taiwan's armed forces.

Tsai made the comment while receiving Vincent B.J. Lawrence, commander-in-chief of the National Commander Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW).

Tsai said the military is the backbone of the country and stands at the front line safeguarding regional security.

She said that as commander-in-chief, "it is my most important task to look after the army and also the veterans.

Since taking office in 2016, according to Tsai, she has paid great attention to military affairs.

Tsai elaborated by saying that she has made a lot of effort in national defense, including looking after the wellbeing of the military, initiating Taiwan's indigenous submarine project, and putting forth policies to support the defense industry.

Taiwan has drawn experience from the VFW in caring for military veterans, she added, and she thanked the VFW for its support and assistance to Taiwan.

According to Tsai, the VFW has been urging the U.S. government and Congress to cooperate with Taiwan on security and to support Taiwan's international participation.

During an April 19 interview, Tsai said it is necessary to continue to strengthen Taiwan's national defense capacity as China will only deal with the cross-Taiwan Strait situation in a peaceful manner when Taiwan has the capacity to defend itself.

Only a strong defense capacity can guarantee peace, according to Tsai.
