Taipei, May 18 (CNA) Construction on the second phase of Taiwan's offshore wind power plant Formosa I, the country's first offshore wind project, officially broke ground in Miaoli County Saturday.
Phase 2 of the offshore wind farm project is expected to comprise the installation of 20 Siemens Gamesa 6 megawatt turbines located some 6 kilometers off the coast of the county.
Matthias Bausenwein, general manager Asia Pacific Ørsted and chairman of Ørsted Taiwan, said at the groundbreaking ceremony that his company will make sure that the project is completed and operational by year-end.
Robert Tsai, chairman of Swancor Renewable Energy Co., said his company will lead the project through site development and construction.
Formosa 1 is being jointly developed by Danish firm Ørsted and Taiwan-based Swancor.
Formosa I comprises two phases, with the first designed to have a total capacity of 8 MW and consisting of two turbines that were successfully installed in October 2016.
The second phase will provide a further 120 MW of capacity, combining total power generation of 128 MW when completed, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
