Local tennis ace placed 2nd in Vancouver Challenger

Taipei, Aug. 19 (CNA) Taiwan's Jason Jung  won a silver trophy in the men's singles on the ATP Challenger Tour in Vancouver Sunday after being defeated by Richard Berankis of Lithuania in the final.

Jung, champion of the Gwangju Open in May, 2018 in South Korea, was the first Taiwanese tennis player to reach the Vancouver Challenger men's singles final, but lost the title to Berankis 3-6, 7-5, 4-6.

Jung, an American-born professional tennis player who represents Taiwan, came into the spotlight after winning gold for Taiwan in the men's singles at the Taipei Universiade, which was held Aug. 19-30, 2017.

He reached the quarterfinals at the 2018 Dell Technologies Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island before losing in three sets to American Tim Smyczek.

The 30-year-old will compete in the U.S. Open Tennis Championships qualifying tournament.
