Taipei, Sept. 14 (CNA) Filip Grzegorzewski, the new head of the European Union mission in Taipei, said in a Facebook video Friday that he was eager to start working to promote ties between the two sides.

Grzegorzewski, 43, who speaks fluent Mandarin, French and English in addition to his native Polish, has been appointed as the head of the European Economic and Trade Office (EETO) in Taipei.

In his video, he said in Mandarin that Taiwan is an open, vibrant and democratic society, and he is looking forward to working with the Taiwanese people to promote EU-Taiwan relations.

According to the EETO, Grzegorzewski is a senior diplomat who specializes in Asia affairs and has held key positions in the European Union, including chair of the Council Working Group on Asia (COASI), and director-general of the Asia-Pacific Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Poland.

Grzegorzewski officially assumed the new position on Sept. 1, replacing Madeleine Majorenko, who returned to Brussels in August after a four-year posting in Taipei.

However, he did not arrive in Taipei until this week because he was in Brussels for the EU Ambassadors Conference.

Friday was his first day on the job in Taipei, Grzegorzewski said in the video.
