Taiwan's Chan sisters advance to quarterfinals of Pan-Pacific Open

Taipei, Sept. 17 (CNA) Taiwanese tennis sisters Latisha Chan (詹詠然) and Chan Hao-ching (詹皓晴) overpowered their opponents Tuesday in the opening round to advance to the women's doubles quarterfinals of the Toray Pan-Pacific Open in Japan.

The Chan sisters opened with a strong start, taking 6-1 in the first set against Monique Adamczak of Australia and Han Xinyun of China.

The pair kept their dominance in the second set to finish 6-0 in a game that lasted 47 minutes at the ITC Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka.

The Taiwanese sisters will next go up against Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Caroline Garcia of France.

Also that day, Taiwanese tennis veteran Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) came from behind to beat Garbine Muguruza of Spain 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1 in the opening match to move into the second round of the women's singles tournament.

Hsieh, who was edged out in the quarterfinals of the Hana-cupid Japan Women's Open in Hiroshima last week, will be running for the women's singles title at the Osaka tournament, which comes with a total purse of US$823,000.

She is scheduled to play Elise Mertens of Belgium Wednesday.

The Toray Pan-Pacific Open is a women's outdoor hardcourt tennis tournament that is held annually in Japan. It is a Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Premier Tournament on the WTA Tour.
