Taipei, Jan. 16 (CNA) The European Parliament (EP) on Wednesday passed two resolutions that include articles expressing support for Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations.

The resolutions -- one on the Common Foreign and Security Policy and another on the Common Security and Defence Policy -- include articles reiterating support for Taiwan's "meaningful participation in international organizations, mechanisms and activities."

They also express concern that the interference of autocratic regimes in elections through disinformation and cyber attacks could threaten Asian democracies and regional stability.

The resolutions stressed the importance of strengthening the European Union's (EU) relations with East Asia and Southeast Asia, as well as urging parties involved in the East China Sea, South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait disputes to resolve their differences through peaceful means.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Thursday thanked the European Parliament for passing the resolutions.

"MOFA expressed appreciations to the EP on its approval of the two resolutions at its plenary session, emphasizing the EU's concerns on regional security and democracy, at a time when Taiwan just concluded its Jan. 11 presidential and legislative elections," MOFA spokeswoman Joanne Ou said at a regular press conference Thursday.

In a statement, MOFA also mentioned EP parliamentarian Michaela Sojdrova's proposal that the EU should strengthen cooperation with Taiwan in relevant fields to counter attempts at foreign electoral interference.

Taiwan will continue to deepen its cooperation with the EU and like-minded countries to defend the values of freedom and democracy and to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the region, MOFA said.

Meanwhile, Bob Chen, head of MOFA's Department of International Organizations, expressed hope that stronger support from the global community for Taiwan's international participation will be more forthcoming this year.

"Our department is encouraged by the EP's passage of the two resolutions ... we have reason to believe that support from the EU countries will be stronger than in past years," Chen said.
