Taipei, Jan. 18 (CNA) The density of automated teller machines (ATMs) in Taiwan's banking system is three times as high as the average in Asia, according to the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC).

In Taiwan, there are 157 ATMs per 100,000 adult clients on average, while in Asia the average is 51.8 ATMs for every 100,000 adults, the FSC said, citing data valid as of October 2019.

Taiwan's ATM density is higher than Japan's (127.59), Singapore's (66.46) and Hong Kong's (51.8), the data showed.

In terms of commercial banks, the density in Taiwan is 17.6 branches per 100,000 adult clients, while Asia averages 9.1, the FSC said.

Taiwan has a higher density of commercial bank branches than Singapore (8.4) but not Japan (34.1) or Hong Kong (21.2), according to the FSC.

In total, Taiwan has 3,404 commercial bank branches that serve 5,682 adult clients on average, but that number excludes post offices, credit union branches and fishermen and farmers' associations, the FSC said.

Among the FSC's other financial indicators valid as of October 2019 is the ratio of unpaid loans, which averages 577 per 1,000 adults in Taiwan.

The data also shows that for every 100,000 adults in Taiwan, there were 758,556 mobile payment transactions as of the end of last October.
