Taipei, Feb. 17 (CNA) Children under the age of 12 will be able to buy four surgical masks per week beginning Thursday under the government's mask rationing plan, up from a previous two per week, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) has announced.

Each location authorized to sell surgical masks will also have 200 children's masks available daily starting Thursday, four times the current amount of 50 masks per day, the CECC said Monday.

The number of adult masks available at each location will increase as well, from 200 to 400 a day, the CECC said, though the number of masks adults can buy will remain at two per week.

The new policy is a result of increased domestic production of masks and the need to prepare children to return to school after their extended winter break, according to the CECC.

Schools at high school level and below are slated to re-open on Feb. 25, two weeks later than originally scheduled, as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) in Taiwan.

The government has requisitioned all domestically produced masks since Jan. 31, and implemented a rationing system for mask purchases to prevent panic-buying and ensure that all Taiwan residents have access to at least two masks a week amid the coronavirus scare.

Under the system, Taiwanese and foreign nationals are allowed to buy masks only at national health insurance (NHI)-contracted pharmacies and drugstores, as well as public health centers across the country by showing their NHI card.

For foreign nationals who do not have an NHI card, they can present an Alien Resident Certificate or an entry permit.
