Kinmen, Feb. 20 (CNA) Representatives from some 150 Taiwan-based travel operators took in the sights of Kinmen this week as part of efforts aimed at attracting more tourists to the offshore county this year.

It is hoped that the efforts will emulate success enjoyed last year by including more interactive experiences as well as do-it- yourself activities into the mix, said Sun Shu-te, director of Golden Universal Travel (GOUNI), which helped to organize the three-day field study tour.

Points of interest such as first-hand experience of Kinmen's history related to its military relics have proven to be especially popular among tourists, Sun said.

The promotion efforts will therefore focus on repackaging this unique attraction to offer visitors a complete new experience during their time in Kinmen, he added.

The tour also took the participants to a number of Kinmen's scenic spots, including the Gugang Tower, located in the Gugang Lake Scenic Area, which is known for being the last remaining natural lake in the island county.

Chiu Chien-lu, a Taipei-based travel operator who did his military service in Kinmen, said he plans to offer nostalgic tours that target visitors in the 40-70 age bracket.

Ting Chien-kang, Kinmen's Tourism Department director, said the county will continue to work with travel operators to rejuvenate tourism amid the Chinese travel ban, which has been made worse following the COVID-19 coronavirus scare.
