Taipei, Feb. 26 (CNA) Both Taiwan's bullet train services and regular rail network will introduce infrared thermometers to their stations in a bid to curb the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, rail authorities said on Tuesday.

Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. (THSRC) said it has procured 24 of the machines, which can measure passengers' temperatures from a distance, allowing for tighter disease control measures.

The machines will not be delivered until April as they are in high demand, according to the company, which offers about 180,000 rides per day.

Meanwhile, the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) said it submitted plans to the central government last week to install 32 infrared thermometers in its larger train stations.

The TRA records around 600,000 passenger trips each day.

THSRC and the TRA both said they are disinfecting their carriages and stations frequently.
