Taipei, March 28 (CNA) The airport mass rapid transit (MRT) line will reduce the frequency of its express trains starting from April 6 until June 14, as demand has fallen due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, Taoyuan Metro Corp. (TMC) announced Saturday.

The trains will begin to operate at reduced frequencies during off-peak hours on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., at 30 minutes per interval, the company said.

During peak hours, they will continue to run at intervals of 15 minutes, it said, noting that on weekends, all trains will run at 30 minutes per interval.

Meanwhile, commuter trains that run on the same line during the period will not be affected, and will continue to operate at regular intervals, according to TMC.

Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan, who toured the Taoyuan HSR station Saturday ahead of the four-day Tomb Sweeping Festival, said the system will refuse access to passengers whose temperature exceeds 37.5 degrees Celsius beginning April 1.

In cases where a forehead infrared thermometer detects a temperature of 37.5 degrees or an ear thermometer registers 38 degrees or over, the person's temperature will be checked a second time and they will not be permitted to enter the station if the reading remains at that level, Cheng explained.

Furthermore, infrared thermal imaging cameras have been installed at all 21 airport MRT stations to screen incoming passengers, and from April 1, everyone arriving at the stations will be required to wear a surgical face mask if they want to use the system, he added.
