Taipei, June 2 (CNA) No new cases of the new coronavirus COVID-19 were reported in Taiwan on Tuesday, leaving the total number of cases at 443 since the outbreak emerged late last year, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

Tuesday was also the 51st consecutive day with no domestically transmitted infection, Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung, who also heads the CECC, said at a press briefing.

The last time Taiwan recorded a domestic infection was April 12, according to the CECC.

Despite the lack of cases in Taiwan, the COVID-19 pandemic is still raging around the world, Chen said.

"New infections are still rising sharply across the globe, with an average increase of 100,000 new cases daily," Chen said.

Even though Taiwan is safer than many parts of the world, people should still remain vigilant and adhere to good personal hygiene in order to fight the pandemic, he added.

To date, 352 of Taiwan's 443 cases of COVID-19 have been classified as imported, while 55 are believed to be local infections, according to CECC statistics.

The other 36 cases were on board a Navy vessel that was on goodwill mission in the Pacific in March, a cluster infection the CECC says originated in Taiwan.

The last time Taiwan recorded an imported infection was on Monday, a woman in her 50s, who went to the United States in March for work reasons and returned to Taiwan Sunday.

To date, 427 COVID-19 patients in Taiwan have recovered, seven have died, and the others are in hospital, the CECC said.

Globally, COVID-19 has infected 6,300,389 people in 187 countries and regions, including 1,838,598 in the United States, 514,849 in Brazil, 414,878 in Russia, 276,332 in the United Kingdom, and 239,638 in Spain, with a total of 375,134 fatalities, according to CECC statistics as of Tuesday.
