Taiwan-U.S. ties to continue to deepen: MOFA

2020-11-25  English News

Taipei, Nov. 24 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Tuesday gave its assurance that Taiwan's communication channels with the United States remain smooth and that both sides are expected to continue to deepen their bilateral relations.

"MOFA is fully aware of political developments in the U.S. We maintain close contact and interaction with both the Democrats and the Republicans," MOFA spokesperson Joanne Ou  said at a regular press briefing.

She was responding to media questions on the prospects for Taiwan-U.S. relations after U.S. President-elect Joe Biden picked Antony Blinken as his secretary of state the previous day.

Blinken served as deputy secretary of state from 2015-2017 and deputy national security advisor from 2013-2015 under former U.S. President Barack Obama.

Ou noted that Taiwan-U.S. relations enjoy bipartisan support in the U.S. because the two countries share common values in freedom, democracy and human rights.

MOFA will continue to maintain smooth communication and interaction with Biden's team through the appropriate channels, she stressed, citing Taiwan's representative to the U.S. Hsiao Bi-khim's  phone call to Blinken in mid-November to congratulate Biden on winning the presidency.

At the same time, Ou thanked the Donald Trump administration for pushing Taiwan-U.S. relations to a "historic high."

"Taiwan will continue to be a close and reliable partner of the U.S." she said.

Meanwhile, Legislator Lo Chih-cheng of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) told CNA that he expects that Taiwan-U.S. relations will still grow pragmatically.

From the perspectives of geopolitics, geoeconomics and geostrategy, Taiwan plays an important role in Washington's global positioning strategy, Lo said.

However, the higher-profile Taiwan-U.S. relations during the Trump administration may become more low-key once Biden and his team enter the White House, because Blinken's position toward China does not seem as tough as that of Trump, he added.
