Taipei, Jan. 18 (CNA) New Ambassador of Haiti to Taiwan Hervé Denis called on Foreign Minister Joseph Wu on Monday to present a copy of his credentials, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said that day.

Wu said he looks forward to working with Denis to deepen bilateral ties, MOFA said in a press statement.

He also lauded Haiti's long-term support for Taiwan's participation in international organizations and asked him to convey Taiwan's appreciation to Haitian President Jovenel Moise, MOFA said.

Denis, for his part, vowed to exert his best efforts to elevate the cooperation and exchanges between the two countries in all fields during his tenure in Taiwan, MOFA said.

He described Taiwan as an important ally of Haiti and thanked the country for carrying out projects in Haiti to promote its people's welfare, the ministry said.

He also suggested that the two countries can expand their cooperation through public-private partnerships, utilizing Haiti's geographical advantage of being close to the United States, MOFA added.

According to the statement, Wu and Denis also exchanged views on various issues of mutual concern during their meeting.

Denis has been posted as a diplomat in the U.S., Germany, Canada, Dominican Republic and Switzerland, and has served as minister of defense and minister of social affairs and labor in the Caribbean country, MOFA said.

He visited Taiwan three times during his stint as president of the Chamber of Commerce of Haiti between 2000 and 2016, MOFA said.

Haiti is one of Taiwan's nine diplomatic allies in the Latin America and Caribbean region.

Denis' predecessor, Rachel Coupaud, served for eight years in Taiwan. She was conferred the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon in November 2020 by Wu for her contributions in promoting bilateral ties before she concluded her tour of duty.
