In the round of 16 of the women's singles event, Tai beat Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia 22-20, 21-16 in straight sets in just 33 minutes.
Tai has played against Gregoria seven times in her career, winning all of their encounters.
With Thursday's victory, Tai, 26, scored her 400th career win in the women' singles on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour since she began competing in 2007, according to the BWF website.
Tai will next face the winner of the match between world No. 10 Michelle Li of Canada and Chinese American Iris Wang.
