Sobriety Checkpoints to Crack Down on DUI through CNY Holiday

With the arrival of the Chinese New Year holiday, it is frequent for friends and families to hold gatherings and banquets during this period. However, a cup or two of alcoholic beverage can slow down one’s reflexes and affect one’s vision, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. The difference of 0.1 seconds can often lead to tragedies.

To make the road safer by catching drunk drivers before something happens, the Neihu Police Precinct will set up DUI checkpoints and strengthen efforts to crack down on DUI during the Chinese New Year holiday.

The checkpoints will be set up at roads which see high frequencies of DUI accidents and established during hours which see increased numbers of intoxicated drivers. Locations of checkpoint include thoroughfares near KTV and restaurants restaurants. The precinct seeks to boost the frequency of roadside DUI checks to at least 6 times each month.

Furthermore, the Neihu Police Precinct plans to dispatch personnel to local stir-fry shops, ginger duck restaurants, and venues selling alcohol to boost its drunk-driving prevention campaign. The messages include “don’t drink and drive,” “choose a designated driver,” and “utilize designated driver service.”

Also, in light of the recent cold spells, Neihu Police Precinct prepared abundant disposable hand warmers for police officials manning the DUI checkpoints. The tool will keep the police officers warm as they stop vehicles and check for drunk drivers.
