While most of the country's airports registered losses as passenger numbers declined last year, Songshan recorded a profit of NT$129 million (US$4.61 million), CAA data indicated.
The figure, however, was an 87 percent drop from Songshan's 1.07 billion profits the previous year, as its passenger numbers shrunk by an annual 50 percent to 3.08 million in 2020, the data showed.
Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the country's main international gateway, suffered losses of NT$1.9 billion last year, as passenger numbers plummeted 84 percent, from 48 million in 2019 to 7.50 million in 2020, according to the CAA.
The decline in passenger numbers was also steep at Taichung International Airport, falling by an annual 60 percent to 1.1 million in 2020, while Kaohsiung International Airport saw a 70 percent drop to 1.89 million, the data showed.
Hualien Airport and Tainan Airport saw passenger numbers fall by about 40 percent last year, Chiayi Airport and Penghu Airport registered a 30 percent drop, and the other airports recorded a decline of around 10 percent, with all of them finishing the year in the red, according to the data.
Apart from the Taoyuan airport, the country's 16 other commercial airports registered total losses of NT$1 billion in 2020, after showing a profit of NT$2 billion in 2019, the CAA said.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most international flights in and out of Taiwan were canceled in 2020, but Songshan Airport managed to stay profitable because it handles mainly domestic flights, according to the CAA.
