Taipei, March 7 (CNA) Hundreds of people, including dozens of Tibetans, took to the streets of Taipei on Sunday, calling for stronger public advocacy against the decades of Chinese oppression in Tibet, as they marked the 62nd anniversary of an uprising against Chinese rule.

People all over the world should speak out on March 10, Tibet National Uprising Day, for the universal value of freedom to be upheld in Tibet, said one of the rally's organizers, the Human Rights Network for Tibet and Taiwan (HRNTT).

Similar rallies have been held in Taiwan over the past 17 years, in commemoration of the March 10, 1959 Tibetan rebellion against Chinese rule, which triggered a Chinese military crackdown in Tibet and forced the Dalai Lama and hundreds of thousands of other Tibetans into exile, according to the group.

"Does anyone need permission to go home?" HRNTT President Tashi Tsering asked. "We Tibetans have been trying for 62 years to go home."

The rally began at Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT Station, and the protesters marched to Xinyi Plaza near the Taipei 101 skyscraper.

"Free Tibet, China out," "Tibet belongs to Tibetans," "Long live Dalai Lama!" they chanted, as they marched.

The march and rally was attended by Taiwanese politicians across party lines, including Legislator Hung Sun-han of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Taipei City Councilor Miao Po-ya of the Social Democratic Party.

Speaking at the rally, Miao said Tibetans have never given up their pursuit of democracy and progressive values. Taiwanese should reflect on this and find new inspiration, she said.

Meanwhile, Huang Cheng-han, head of the National Chengchi University Student Association, said at the rally that people should remain vigilant against China's many tactics to suppress Tibet, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

"As Taiwanese, we must understand that anyone who deals with China is doomed," Huang said.

The organizers of Sunday's event said another gathering has been planned for March 10, at Freedom Square in Taipei, to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the Tibetan uprising.
