Taipei, April 9 (CNA) Although the water shortage situation in central Taiwan is serious, it is currently sustainable with the rationing measures already in place, a Water Resources Agency (WRA) official said Friday.

However, if the drought continues existing water restrictions could last until June or even longer, WRA Deputy Director-General Wang Yi-feng (王藝峰) said.

The agency has already prepared for the worst and is considering every contingency in case the situation worsens, Lin said.

On Tuesday, large parts of Taichung and some areas of Miaoli and Changhua began supplying water five days a week on a rotational basis.

As of 1 p.m. Friday, the water level at reservoirs in northern Taiwan -- Shihmen, Baoshan, Yongheshan, Mingde and Liyutan -- were at 32.80, 8.44, 10.61 and 9.36 percent capacity, respectively.

Meanwhile, Techi and Zengwen reservoirs in Taichung and Chiayi were at 5.15 and 11.58 percent capacity, WRA statistics showed.

According to the Central Weather Bureau, due to the arrival of a northeasterly wind system, sporadic showers were seen in some northern and northeastern regions of Taiwan early Friday.

However, the rain was mainly concentrated in New Taipei and Taoyuan, Wang said, noting that even mountainous areas of Taichung remained dry.
