Taipei, April 17 (CNA) A reassurance offered by the United States and Japan to uphold peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait during a Friday summit will contribute to safety across the Indo-Pacific region, Taiwan's Presidential Office said.

It is hoped that Beijing will work toward the same goal, Presidential Office spokesperson Xavier Chang said in a press release Saturday.

Chang made the remarks after U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga reaffirmed their commitment to upholding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait during a meeting in Washington that took place on Friday.

The reassurance followed a similar commitment in March during a U.S.-Japan Security Consultative Committee, in which the two sides also placed significance on cross-strait stability, Chang said.

This means that the issue is no longer simply a concern between Taiwan and China but instead carries regional or global importance, according to Chang.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its Mainland Affairs Council also pledged that Taiwan will work with the U.S., Japan and like-minded countries to maintain stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. Meanwhile, the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) said it welcomes all measures that contribute to regional stability.

KMT Deputy Secretary-General Huang Kwei-bo said, however, that Taiwan must not make any concessions on sovereignty.

Political leaders from Taiwan and China should also work proactively to lay the foundation for healthy discussion, Huang said.
