Taipei, April 17 (CNA) Taiwan on Saturday confirmed two new imported cases of COVID-19 involving recent arrivals from India, bringing the total number of cases in the nation to 1,072 since the pandemic emerged in late 2019, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

Both cases are Indian students in their 20s and 30s who arrived in the country on March 30, CECC spokesperson Chuang Jen-hsiang said during a press briefing in Taipei.

According to Chuang, both of them had presented negative COVID-19 test results before boarding their flights to Taiwan.

After they completed their mandatory 14-day quarantine, he said, their school arranged for them to take a COVID-19 test at a hospital on April 14, the results of which on Saturday came up positive.

The CECC spokesman said the two men have been asymptomatic so far and that contact tracing was not necessary, as everyone who had come into contact with them at the hospital were well protected.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 1,072 cases of COVID-19, with 956 classified as imported. Of the total, 1,033 have recovered, 11 have died and 28 are in hospital, according to CECC statistics.

Globally, COVID-19 has infected 139.51 million people in 193 countries and regions, with more than 3 million fatalities as of Saturday, CECC data shows.
