Taipei, May 14 (CNA) Taiwan on Friday confirmed 29 new domestic cases of COVID-19, the most locally transmitted infections in a single day since the outbreak began early last year, as authorities continued to grapple with a string of cluster infections in northern Taiwan.

A total of 16 of the cases were linked to a cluster involving hostess teahouses in Taipei's Wanhua District; five were associated with a cluster in Luzhou, New Taipei, involving members of the Lions Club International organization; and one was linked to a games arcade in Yilan County.

The sources of seven of the new cases have not yet been determined, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said.

Of the 16 cases from Wanhua, eight were females in their 40s-60s who worked at local hostess teahouses and three were males who had recently patronized one of the teahouses.

Another four were contacts of known patients in the Wanhua cluster, and one was a man who had recently visited the Wanhua area, the CECC said.

The five cases from Luzhou consisted of two contacts of case No. 1,203, who is involved with the district's local Lions Club branch, and three family members of other cases in the Luzhou cluster, according to the CECC.

Meanwhile, the seven cases of unknown origin consisted of a married couple in their 70s, two men in their 60s, a woman in her 50s, a woman in her 30s and a boy over 10 years old, CECC data showed.

No information on where they reside or where they may have been infected was provided other than being identified as residents of northern Taiwan.

The remaining case was a female in her 60s who had contact with a patient in a cluster involving Yilan County video arcades.

Overall, the new domestic cases consisted of 16 female and 13 male Taiwanese nationals. 28 of the new patients identified live in northern Taiwan, while one case -- involving the daughter of a patient in the Luzhou cluster -- lives in Kaohsiung, the CECC said.

Four of the patients are asymptomatic. The other 25 developed symptoms including a cough, fever and sore throat between May 2-12, and were referred for testing in the last two days, the CECC said.

Meanwhile, the CECC on Friday confirmed five new imported COVID-19 cases, which originated in Indonesia, Paraguay and Armenia.

The new cases reported Friday raised the total number in Taiwan to 1,290, of which 164 have been confirmed as domestic.

Of the total, 171 were in the hospital, while 1,107 had recovered and 12 had died, according to CECC data as of Friday.
