Penghu fireworks festival to kick off with diverse showsTaipei, April 18 (CNA) The opening of the annual International Fireworks Festival in Penghu County on Thursday will feature a range of events, including an air show and a religious procession, according to the organizers.
During the air show, four Indigenous Defense Fighters (IDFs) will fly in formation over Guanyinting Recreation Area in Magong City on the main Penghu Island in the Taiwan Strait, the county government said.
The opening ceremony will also feature a procession of 23 palanquins, bearing statues of gods, through the downtown area of the city to present a touch of local religious culture, it added.
The two-month Fireworks Festival will run through June 21, with some 23 fireworks displays not only in Magong but on other islets in the offshore county, the local government said.
The festival, first held in 2003, has become a major tourist attraction in Penghu, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each year, according to the local government.
